A Yahoo! Groups query

I belong to a Yahoo! group named “shep” in honour of the late, great, radio humourist Jean Shepherd. We have been getting lots of SPAM[tm] over the years because the owner, sadly, has died and the security settings on the group are the least restrictive you can get.

Now, I have two questions:

1) If I had the login name and a password cracker, what are the odds that I would be able to crack the account and change the security settings as well as appoint a new owner(s)? Anyone have experience in this? I think it’s probably illegal so I probably won’t do it, but it’s always nice to enquire.

2) Does anyone know of a way to download the messages from the group archive so that we can save them and transfer to another group?

We are currently discussing this within the group, but the general drift seems to be that unless we can take the posts with us, a new venue is probably not worth the trouble.
