Tonight’s dinner

Occasionally HWMBO insists we have fish for dinner. My doctor would like me to eat more broiled, steamed, or baked fish (not fried, of course). However, I really don’t like fish. I can choke down the fish in “fish ‘n’ chips” but that’s fried, thus bad for you. So last night I took two salmon fillets (boneless and skinless) out of the freezer. I bought asparagus, and cooked rice as well. Put salt, pepper, and dill on the fish, and baked it at gas mark 6 for about 15 minutes.

Now HWMBO eats his unadulterated with any sauce. However, I can’t really choke it down unless I load it with ketchup. He scorns, but if I didn’t have ketchup on it I’d be lost, staring at the naked salmon saying “How can I get rid of this without HWMBO knowing?”

So this is the result, photographed this very evening. Note that the fish is almost (but not quite) hidden from view. I was stingy with the ketchup this time.

    What is your favourite fish if you had to choose? Salmon is probably one of the easiest to eat, but of course, some people dislike the taste. What about smoked salmon?

    In general, is it the texture, or taste or both that you dislike?

    My own personal view: what is there to not like about fish? 🙂

    Favourite fish? I suppose haddock, as it has virtually no taste or texture and can be smothered in tartar sauce or ketchup (or both) and not impinge on your palate. I don’t like smoked salmon either…occasionally at a course they have smoked salmon sandwiches and I accidentally pick one up. One has to choke it down but it’s difficult. I wish they’d label the platters when they do that so that I can avoid the fish. I also can eat tunafish salad, as long as there is sufficient mayonnaise and onion in it.

    I do not agree with the statement that there is nothing not to like about fish, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.

    I was raised Roman Catholic in the 1950’s on the seashore, so we had fish on Fridays because we had to and on Mondays and Wednesdays because it was cheap. I was all fished out by the time I got to university and was able to choose my own menu. Neither of my siblings likes fish either. At least I will eat it when forced to; I don’t believe either of them has eaten any fish at all for the last 35 years or so.

    LOL I was merely expressing a very personal view. Let me just add that my statement only applies to cooked fish. I don’t like fish in the context of “sushi” (now, that is just totally disgusting!)

    Tunafish is wonderful, and can taste almost like veal. I’m getting hungry.

    Have you ever thought about trying tilapia? Like you, cannot abide most “real fish”. He loves certain shellfish — shirmp and scallops are In Much Danger around Bryon — but “fishy fish” leaves him, well, cold as a fish. However, we’ve found that he can actually enjoy some of the lighter fishes, such as tilapia. Especially when they’re drowned in Something Else. :-}}}

    Last Sunday I fixed tilapia with garlic and herbs for lunch, jazzing it up by using an extra tablespoon of butter and about 2-3 tablespoons of fresh minced rosemary instead of the “pinch” of dried herbs.

    Mmmm, mmmm, good. And the smell was so delightful that just a couple of hours after lunch, we attracted our new roommate.

    BTW, have you noticed that your comment thingie has a teensy-tiny font? 😛

    Hehehe. I’m reminded of a movie quote (“Desperately Seeking Susan”, maybe?): Sushi’s not bad. When you cook it, it tastes just like fish.

    Yes, I have. I even asked for help in my journal in changing it so that it was bigger and not washed-out grey. My abilities do not seem to stretch to changing much about livejournal. Got no response…. I feel like a damsel in distress, waving my hankie but getting no response from any of you big strong men out there…

    As for tilapia, I’m not familiar with it. However, this link says that the UK is the main European outlet for the stuff. I guess that I don’t go to fish markets at all^W^Wenough.
