A horrible day

So guns don’t kill people, people kill people. … I’m just heartsick about the killings in Virginia.

We watched “Meet the Foxes” on Channel 4 tonight–it was a program about urban foxes. A family of four foxes and their mother was followed; only the mother survived the year. One was run over, one had terminal mange, two were shot (I think that was the scorecard…) HWMBO is the kindest heart around, and he just couldn’t bear to watch some of it. Very graphic, especially of the shootings. The mother was run over but survived.

We have seen an urban fox in the garden, and I’ve seen another on Swan Street. So we do have wildlife other than squirrels.

I can’t watch animals being harmed. Just can’t.

The Virginia thing is truly odd. I will be interested to hear more about it; spree killing has been an interest of mine for a while.

trying to be more American than Americans, perhaps. The killer, who didn’t have ID on him, apparently was Asian and apparently blew his face off. The police are trying to ID him through the gun purchases. (There’s a photo of a cop cuffing an Asian man in one of the slideshows of the events at Virginia Tech — Roanoke Times website, I think).

It strikes close to me as I used to go there to do research on books. A kinswoman works there, and my father graduated from there in the 1940s. I used to live about 80 miles away and Blacksburg had the closest good bookstore and the university library was open to all Virginia residents.

I am just waking up, so I’ll take a look at what’s transpired during my night. I’m still speechless, really, but I am still having difficulty taking it all in.

Your urban foxes, left to themselves, will probably work on reducing the urban squirrel population.
