Well, we went to Curry’s to buy a TV

…and we came out with this one, which seems to be well-thought of in reviews and is bigger than HWMBO wanted (he’d probably be satisfied with something the size of his Ipod screen) but smaller than I wanted (40″: I’m no size queen!). It’s HDTV ready and should work also with everything we’ve got at the moment.

They will install it and take the old one away (which will save me the trouble of calling the borough to take it away). We won’t get it until Thursday, which means that HWMBO will miss Doctor Who this evening…but I’ll be able to watch Have I Got News For You next Friday–that’s the program on which the old set finally fizzled out.

The whole thing, including a stand and installation, was GBP 804.93. And yes, I am aware it might have been slightly cheaper elsewhere. Comparison shopping is so boring, and when you’re TV-less, the quicker you get one, the better.

Now I have to unhook the old TV and clean the living room. In every silver lining, there is a cloud.

    Congratulations on your new tele!

YOU CAN NOT MISS DR. WHO THIS EVENING!!! It’s part one of a two-parter! The Daleks in Manhattan! (If you can’t get to a friend’s to watch it, I guess you could always download it from me at http://chazhome.com/Dr%20Who/Dr%20Who%202007.html ) — but be sure to watch it before NEXT WEEK’S part two! I’ve heard some very good things about the upcoming episodes!

You could have missed last week’s, I guess… It was sort of stupid — however, the one main nugget of knowledge was that the Face of Boe whispered his secret to The Doctor — “You are not alone” – before passing away. Leaving us to wonder about the upcoming two-part production entitled “The Sound of Drums” and “Last of the Time Lords” — could The Master be coming back? Perhaps the Rani!?!? I liked her!

Hey — I have a question for you that you might be able to answer — is it considered RUDE or IMPOLITE if someone not of Scottish decent wears proper Scotsman’s clothing? I’ve been thinking of getting a kilt, but my Scottish roots are so weak, I’m unsure of the proper Tartan, and then it dawned on me: It might be considered rude by some for a non-Scotsman to wear Scottish clothing. Any light you can shed would be appriciated!

It says that “this episode is not downloadable” so I guess I’ll have to wait. HWMBO is the consumer of Doctor Who in this household; I hate to say it to a confirmed Doctor Who aficionado, but I never got into it and thus don’t watch it. I will download it for him when available and surprise him with it.

I don’t think that Scots think it’s rude or impolite to wear a tartan if you’re not Scottish. If you claimed to be a McTavish of That Ilk, or something like that, and wore the McTavish tartan to Scottish events trying to pass yourself off as more Scottish than the McTavish clan chief, they might get a bit annoyed. If you’re just wearing it because you like the design I think they’ll be happy to take your money and make you a kilt.

What is the name of the Scottish ancestor you have? There are lots of online sources for such things. My Scottish ancestors are surnamed “Andrews” and are entitled to wear the Anderson tartan, which is kind of a light blue and green design, very nice. If you go the whole hog and get the sporran, the socks, the buckled shoes, the belt, the dagger, and the sash you might be paying as much as GBP 1000, or even more. I’m told that if you’re not Scottish you can get them to design a tartan just for you. Probably costs a bundle…

If you’re still a bit chary, why not try the utilikilt people, who will make a camouflage kilt (for example). I’ve had friends who are very satisfied customers of theirs.

I’ll bet you just want an excuse to go commando…:-)

The ‘this episode is not downloadable” message will go away tomorrow or Monday (at the latest) once 1) it is broascast, 2) captured, and 3) convered to DivX AVI (computer) video.

Oh, I wouldn’t lie about my personal heratiage; however, if I’m only 1/10th Scottish, I wouldn’t want to be considered a “poser.” I love the New Hampshire Highland Games, a true Scottish affair with booths for every tartan. I need to ask my Mum about the Scottish blood, she has the answer as to which clan is in our hearatage.

I know several Andrews *ahem* quite personally! (Nod nod, wink wink, say no more!) 😉

I love Utilikilts — on other people. I prefer the authentic thing… In fact one of my best mates made a television connercial for Utilikilt when they held their “create a commercial for us” contest.

I love freeballing (going commando), but it did take a while to get “re-adjusted” to it two years ago; and I don’t do it as often as I used to… I don’t need a kilt to do that! 😉

Thanks for your assistance, and enjoy your new tele!

If you were 1/10th Scottish, you’d be one of the most sought-after people in genetics in the world: 1/8th, or 1/16th, or 1/32nd maybe…

Beware of geneology: once you’ve been bitten by the bug, it’s hard to stop. I’ve got my heritage on my mother’s father’s side back to 1630 and on my father’s father’s mother’s side back to the late 1700s (she was the Scottish one but, surprise, some of her ancestry is actually Irish and she herself was born in England).

I would like to get a camouflage Utilikilt…if I could only slip it past HWMBO…

My Mum is the geneologist in the family… It can stay that way, IMHO. I’m so anal, I could see myself getting stuck in that trap.

I think you’d look good in a camouflage Utilikilt! Make it seem like his idea, a la Hogan’s Heros. 😉

By the way, Dr. Who is online now. Just finished installing it into the server.
