Senator Barack Obama has been elected President of the United States. My happiness knows no bounds.

Great news, indeed. Hope he doesn’t disappoint. Clinton was disappointing. So much for “change”.

McCain knew to fold. I almost pity him.

Every human being sometimes disappoints in some way or another. My prayer is that President-Elect Obama shows the same organisational and oratorical skills that he showed on the way to the White House. He has definite ideas about where the United States needs to go, and I think means to use his massive victory to achieve them.

Will he do everything I think he should? Probably not. Will he fall short in some says? I’m sure he will. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was an inspired leader of the United States during the Depression and the Second World War. However, he had feet (perhaps wheels) of clay, especially in the interning of Japanese-Americans, which I think rivals almost every other injustice of the Twentieth Century in its sheer nastiness and racism.

All we can do is support him where he is right, point out where we think he should change or where we think he is wrong, and harness the incredible energy of this election to overhaul the world that the Second World War made and the Cold War confirmed.
