Random thoughts for the New Year

  • I have pretty much stopped looking at Usenet newsgroups in favour of Twitter, Facebook, and Live Journal. Sad, but true.
  • You will all think I’m crazy, but a taste from my childhood that I cannot reproduce with the equipment at my disposal is percolated coffee. Yes, it tasted boiled, it was strong, it was assertive, it might even have tasted burnt. However, it is something I crave. Pyrex glass percolators are on sale on eBay by their dozens, but they are almost all located in the US. A six- or eight-cup glass percolator is what I want. I may buy one and have it shipped to my brother in time for our visit this year.
  • I also want a theremin. Totally mad, but after seeing this YouTube video of Clara Rockmere playing “The Swan” by Saint-Saens, I am hooked. To my astonishment, they are available on eBay as well. There are many models, one- and two-antenna models.
  • It has been quite cold so far this winter—I wish it would warm up a bit.
  • After finishing my metronidazole, I had my first alcoholic drink in two months or more. It was Drambuie on the rocks. What I wasn’t aiming for is the rocketing-up of my blood sugar the next morning.
  • We went to the Saatchi Gallery today to see some current American artists’ works. With one or two exceptions, they were shite. Oh well…the fare at Patisserie Val

I am taking a free course next week from Tom Gilb about management communications.

I read that name as “Tom Glib” and thought that it was a rather unfortunate name for the subject.

And a Happy New Year to you. Did you ever connect with David Horne while he was there?

  5. chrishansenhome says:

I have known Tom for 15 years, in fact I took a course from him the first full three days I was here in the United Kingdom. He was originally noted for formulating a variation on the Fagin inspection process with Dot Graham in a book called “Software Inspection”. The course I took was to enable me to manage the software inspection process.

Since then I’ve bumped into him at various times. He’s originally from California, but now lives in Norway where he married and had a family. If you Google him I’m sure you’ll find references to lots of articles and books about the management of software development.

did you realise (maybe this put the theramin into your mind) that Tim Wilson (soc.motss’ MOTW) got a theramin for christmas?

I don’t know if you’ll be able to see this video, but here he is playing it

I think you SHOULD get a theramin. AND a ?hat? ?headdress? like that worn by Mme Rockmore in this video. It’s *YOU*.

  7. chrishansenhome says:

I was able to see the video, but someone else posted Madame Rockmore’s video in Facebook and that’s where I saw it.

I shall have to get HWMBO to buy me a theramin. I will pass on the hat.

The sound of percolating coffee is something I miss, and the smell. That buuuurrrrrRUP-hissss… what a delightful sound! Very soothing, I think. As a child, I was fascinated by the water which burbled in that little glass knob on top.

About 15 years ago, there was a very good cartoon on American television called I.M. Weasel. It starred Michael Dorn (“Worf”) as the handsome, atheltic, brilliant spy I.M. Weasel. His nemesis was I.R. Baboon, a dumb, jealous, greedy baboon who never caught a break and who always tried to out-do Weasel. At least once a show, Baboon would bend over — exposing his red butt — and the audience would laugh.

In one fantastic episode, Weasel plays the cello and Baboon decides to one-up him. So he chooses the theremin. They have a musical duel at an outdoor auditorium. For once, Baboon wins! But in playing his theremin so hard, he brings down the house — literally — and is crushed beneath tons of rocks.

At this point, I.M. Weasel leaps on top of the rubble, puts his hand to his heart, bows his head, and says:

“He was a virtuoso theremin player… and a good monkey.”
