…this story just goes to show that no matter how good your selection process is, and how rigourous, sometimes people slip through who perhaps oughtn’t.

    A Nasa spokesman said at present Capt Nowak’s status was “unchanged”.

    I first read this as “unhinged”, which seems appropriate, especially given the picture at the top of the article.
