Blame MadPriest for this one, although I’ve heard it before, I think…

Friday, May 30th, 2008

A shy gentleman was preparing to board a plane, when he heard that the Pope was on the same flight. “This is exciting,” thought the gentleman. “I’ve always been a big fan of the Pope. Perhaps I’ll be able to see him in person.”

Imagine his surprise when the Pope himself sat down in the seat next to him for the flight. Still, the gentleman was too shy to speak to the Pontiff. Shortly after takeoff, the Pope began a crossword puzzle.

“This is fantastic,” thought the gentleman. “I’m really good at crosswords. Perhaps, if the Pope gets stuck, he’ll ask me for assistance.”

Almost immediately, the Pope turned to the gentleman and said, “Excuse me, but do you know a four-letter word referring to a woman that ends with the letters ‘u-n-t’?”

Only one word leapt to mind.

“My goodness,” thought the gentleman, “I can’t tell the Pope that. There must be another word.”

The gentleman thought for quite a while, then it hit him. Turning to the pope, the gentleman said, “I think the word you’re looking for is ‘aunt’.”

“Of course!” cried the Pope. “Do you have an eraser?”

One Amazing Organist

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

I may have referred to Cameron Carpenter before; I had seen a video from Trinity Church Wall Street of a concert he gave there, and this was the finale. I am a sucker for “The Stars and Stripes Forever” I’m afraid, and I think that his rendition is perhaps the best organ rendition of the march that I have ever heard. He is definitely the next Virgil Fox (whom I met twice in my high school years and who was the same type of flamboyant showman that Carpenter is).

Turn the volume up and let ‘er rip!

What we did over the Bank Holiday

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

One of the few non-religious holidays we share with the United States is the Late May Bank Holiday, which coincides with Memorial Day. There is no particular celebration attached to it, of course, as with most Bank Holidays, so it’s just for us to enjoy.

This weekend, except for Saturday, it pissed down rain every single day through today and probably tomorrow as well.

So we start with Friday, where I went to the gym and then just crashed. Saturday HWMBO and I helped out at the parish table sale, at which we made a very little money but had lots of fun. I bought HWMBO a little toy stuffed walrus (Beanie Baby, I think). We’ll soon be overrun by stuffed toys. That evening we went to dinner at Ethel King’s flat; Ethel is our fellow parishioner at St. Matthew’s and a real gem.

Sunday I preached, then we went to lunch at the Well with , , , , , Mark, and Clive. A great time was had by all; afterward we returned home and fed single malt Scotch to most all of them.

Monday it pissed and pissed and pissed down rain. We were quite annoyed that the weather wasn’t cooperating with us. I don’t believe we did much of anything until the evening, when , , , and joined us at home for Manhattans and then travelled with us to Belgo on Kingsway (watch out for the website, lots of cutsie twee animations…) for mussels, burgers, and sausages and chicken. Oh, and beer. Unfortunately I am now learning that going to a restaurant on a Bank Holiday Monday is often a recipe for ingredients that are unavailable and chefs that are last-minute substitutes. My burger, rather than being cooked medium, pink, and juicy (as I asked) was cooked well, grey, and DRY. There was no pickle, and the salad was put into the burger rather than left on the side. When I asked for mayonnaise for my frites, the waitress (with whom was shamelessly flirting) said that they had run out. I recoiled in mock horror and said, “What, a Belgian restaurant with no mayonnaise???” in the same tone taken in The Importance of Being Earnest over a handbag. She then scraped some up for me, which was very nice indeed.

Tuesday I worked at home, then set off for a Lodge meeting. One of our daughter lodges is the Lodge of Eternal Light, which meets in the Southgate Masonic Center. It’s two stops before the northern end of the Piccadilly Line, so it is quite a lengthy trip. Many of our Lodge’s members are also members of Eternal Light, and many of Eternal Light’s members are also members of Goliath Chapter of the Royal Arch. So, I knew most of the brethren.

The ceremony was OK, with some exceptions. The Tyler held us up for about 10 minutes by not preparing the Initiation Candidate correctly. There was a Metropolitan Grand Inspector present, and the ceremony of getting him in and sitting next to the Worshipful Master was quite a production. He has his own Master of Ceremonies, who basically takes over the Lodge while the MGI walks in a second procession. The Worshipful Master handed him the gavel, as the MGI is entitled to take over the Lodge from the WM when he arrives, but the MGI handed it back.l

The Tyler also forgot to get the candidate’s rings from him (an initiation candidate enters the ceremony divested of all money and metallic substances). I was told he is a substitute Tyler, so perhaps he’s not seasoned yet.

In the middle of the ceremony they call off the Lodge and everyone goes downstairs and has a cup of tea. This further delayed the ceremony. It was 7:45 pm before we started dinner.

A quaint ceremony during the toast to the initiate was, well, quaint. We made a circle in a particular way with hands interlaced. A speech was delivered pointing out how the chain of the circle could not be broken. Then, we welcomed the candidate.

All in all, this took until well past 10 pm. I didn’t get home until 11:30. I’m bushed. and are on their way to Tanzania for their safari trip. I hope they bag lots of pictures.

Happy birthday, <lj user=”besskeloid”>

Yesterday’s housing drama partially sorted out

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

I finally heard from Neil this noon. Apparently the Community of the Holy Trinity was wound up in February but no one bothered to tell me. So my money was going into some black hole. The housing association has been in touch with Neil and a cheque will be going out to them shortly.

So it wasn’t malicious, only neglectful.

At least I shan’t have to pay that extra money ever again to the Community of the Holy Trinity. One good thing.

Of course, if the bookstore clerk who worked in that store and found the shelf empty, suspected shoplifting (40 Bibles at a time?) and then found and returned all the Bibles to the correct shelves had a blog, she might blog too.

The rest of my week

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

The Archdeaconry Service on Thursday night was good; the Archdeacon preached a very good sermon and the Cathedral was packed. There was a bit of confusion over who had been elected Churchwarden at St. Matthew’s which perhaps has not yet been settled. I may say more about this later.

Friday HWMBO woke up in more pain than he had been experiencing previously from his tooth extraction, so we called Kings at 9 am and they advised him to come in. We returned there and the verdict was that the extraction site was infected, so they gave him amoxicillin. He’s still mostly eating soup and soft stuff, but I think the pain has abated and he’s speaking normally. So that’s good. However, it pretty much has made the weekend a drab affair.

Yesterday was the Mayesta (church fair) at St. John’s Larcom Street, where I often preach on Sundays. It never actually poured, but it was stubbornly sodden all day, with mist one minute, small droplets the next, and no rain the next, repeat all afternoon. I was on the door and I think about 200 people attended, which was good. As to how much money they made, I’m sure it was respectable but perhaps not as much as last year. We all had fun, though.

Today we had a confusing day at church, of which perhaps more later. It’s cool, but sunny. Now it’s rest and relax, gym later on this afternoon, and perhaps I’ll mow the lawn again. *sigh* The life of a country bumpkin.

My week so far…

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

On Monday HWMBO and I went to King’s College Hospital to get his left-lower wisdom tooth taken out. It was quite efficient and, according to him, better than the service he’d had in Singapore to remove a different wisdom tooth. He is still recuperating, but seems to be OK, and most of the swelling has gone. I am grateful.

Tuesday was the Diocesan Board of Finance AGM. Very ho-hum, except that a sandwich buffet is provided, which is always useful. Nothing significant that can be reported.

Wednesday was our Lodge meeting and Installation. My difficulty was that I got the times mixed up. So I arrived at 4:30 just as the procession was about to enter the Lodge. I threw on my apron and gloves and ended up only missing the initial procession. I felt like such a berk–but in my defence there had been some confusion over the starting time and later on one of our members who is a Grand Officer told off the Worshipful Master for the early start. We will probably not be starting before 5 pm from now on.

The ceremony itself was quite good, with one exception: I forgot almost everything I knew about my new office of Junior Warden. I gavelled when I shouldn’t have, I didn’t gavel when I should have, and exited my pedestal from the wrong side. I continued on this route by getting the customary ritual wrong during the Festive Board, where I flubbed the walk up to the Master’s place by quickly striding instead of slowly walking. Oh well. I shall be Junior Warden for a year (4 meetings and many more Lodges of Instruction) so I should have it down pat before the next meeting in September.

Things I enjoyed:

— I was very happy to hear my friend Nadeem’s name read out as a candidate for initiation during the ceremony.

— I was asked to give the Toast to the Visitors. Last year a person who gave this toast at another meeting managed to tell a smutty anti-gay joke, for which he was duly rebuked. This time I was asked to give it, and I thought of a short joke that could be used to edify rather than break down. I used it in a sermon last year and thus I knew it would be innocuous. My toast was:

“A GP was sitting in his surgery at night when all of a sudden a woman rushed into the room towing a man in her wake and said, ‘Doctor, doctor, you have to help my husband! He thinks he’s a moth!’

“The doctor looked at her and said, ‘Madam, I’m a GP. If your husband thinks he’s a moth he needs a psychiatrist, not a GP. Why did you bring him here?’

“The man burst out, ‘Your light was on'”

“At one point in our initiations we are asked what the predominant wish of our hearts is. We answer, “Light”. In our lodge we have light, and we are honoured and delighted to share it with our visitors. We welcome them, and we hope they will return to share it with us again. Brethren, please be upstanding to drink a toast to our visitors.”

After the toast and Masonic Fire, as I sat down there was a smattering of applause. I have never heard applause for a toast before at the Festive Board. I was dead chuffed.

Tonight is the Archdeaconry Service at the Cathedral, in which I have a small part as Lay Chair.

Friday night, finally, I’ll be able to spend time with my honey. It’s always inconvenient when evening activities bunch themselves up in one week. Next week I only have one evening activity so far, so I’ll be able to devote all my time to HWMBO.

A Yahoo! Groups query

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

I belong to a Yahoo! group named “shep” in honour of the late, great, radio humourist Jean Shepherd. We have been getting lots of SPAM[tm] over the years because the owner, sadly, has died and the security settings on the group are the least restrictive you can get.

Now, I have two questions:

1) If I had the login name and a password cracker, what are the odds that I would be able to crack the account and change the security settings as well as appoint a new owner(s)? Anyone have experience in this? I think it’s probably illegal so I probably won’t do it, but it’s always nice to enquire.

2) Does anyone know of a way to download the messages from the group archive so that we can save them and transfer to another group?

We are currently discussing this within the group, but the general drift seems to be that unless we can take the posts with us, a new venue is probably not worth the trouble.

…comes from Mrs. Jennifer Edwards, to wit:

Apostolic Greetings !!!,

God will grant you the willingness and interest to digest this humble narrations though it might be so surprise and strange to believe my story but i knew by the reason of the almighty you will humbly understood and accept to proceed with my proposal though we have not met or seen each other before.

My name is Mrs. Jennifer Edward a widow to Mr.Edward G. Robinson who was a competent business man here in Abidjan Cote d’ivoire , we were married for many yrs without any child till his death in October 2005 after a brief illness. Due to the promise which i revered to him on the alter at the day of our church wedding i decided not to remarry or get a child outside my matrimonial home which is against the holy bible.

My happiness is that my late husband lived a life of a true & worthy Christian and he has this plan before his death which he pleaded with me to appropriate it to accomplishment. He took this decision with me to use this fund in building an orphanage in his name that will accommodate thousand’s of children, and also to use part of this fund in helping the less fortunate and to spread the gospel of the lord to the remote places of the world.

He made this deposit of $(3.9Million)USD Three Million nine hundred thousand U.S. Dollars in a Finance Security Company here in Abidjan . Recently, my Doctor told me that i would not last for the next 5 months due to cancer & stroke illness.

Having known my condition i decided to seek for a competent and reliable God fearing person or church to entrust this fund to utilize this fund the way i narrated above as my late husband desired.

The Bible made us to understand that “Blessed is the hand that giveth”. I took this decision because i don’t have any child that will inherit this money and my late husband’s relatives are not Christians and I don’t want my late husband’s efforts to be used by unbelievers.

I don’t want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly way. This is why I am taking this decision. I am not afraid of death hence i know where i am going. I don’t need any telephone communication in this regard because of my health hence the presence of my husband’s relatives are around me always. i don’t want them to know about this development.

As soon as i receive your reply i shall give you the relevant documents that will legalize you to have access over this fund. I will also issue you an affidavit that will proove you the present beneficiary of this fund in the Finance Security Company. I want you and the church to always pray for me because the lord is my shepherd.

My happiness is that i and my late husband lived a life of a worthy Christian. Whoever that Wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and Truth.

Please always be prayerful all through your life and pray to God to forgive me my sins. Contact me on my private email bellow, any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing for another church or a God fearing person for this same purpose.

Please assure me that you will act accordingly as i stated herein. Hoping to receive your reply.

Your’s Sister In Christ,
Mrs Jennifer Edward

I thought that Edward G. Robinson died in 1973 after having made that immortal movie, Soylent Green. I guess that he survived to live to that great age of 111 and died in the Ivory Coast. AND, he was a competent business man? Who knew?
