A frustrating day

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Last night my computer became somewhat unresponsive&#8212it would start working, then when I tried to do something, it would freeze up and I’d have to reboot. A lot of swearing later, I just went to bed.

I worked on it all today (with a job interview over the phone in between bouts of working) and finally think I’ve figured out what was causing it. I’m not sure, but things have been pretty much OK since I disabled a few services.

It’s now midnight 32 am and it’s time for bed. Foot clinic tomorrow.

Happy birthday, <lj user=”gmjambear”> and <lj user=”rfmcdpei”>…

Today’s Uplifting Video

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

One of the things that we don’t do often enough is make other people feel good about themselves. Living in modern society often makes us callused around the edges; being rubbed raw by every passer-by and annoying person you meet makes you put up a barrier to avoid being hurt any more.

This short movie, Validation, which I’m sure everyone else has seen before me but which was brought to my attention by , is about making people feel good about themselves and thus make the rest of us feel good too. If you haven’t seen it do watch it. I guarantee you’ll smile.

Today’s Hilarious Video

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Some of you are Singaporeans or know something about Singapore and will find this video side-splittingly funny. I laughed until the tears were rolling down my cheeks.

Those of you who are not Singaporeans and who don’t know much about Singapore should go to this link, read the story about the erstwhile Miss Singapore World, Ris Low, then watch the video. You should watch it in full-screen mode as most of it is in Singlish and there are supertitles projected on the back curtain that will help with comprehension.

Foot update

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

I dressed my foot this morning. When I took the old dressing off, I was very pleased to find that the wound, which had previously looked like a tadpole (an oval “head” with a long “tail”), had lost its tail and turned into a rather small oval. The healing continues, and I think that if everything goes well, the wound will be healed by the time the study ends for me in three weeks. Will I be relieved not to have to wear this freaking boot!

This week’s course

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

The course on Communicating with Management given by Tom Gilb finished Friday. As is usual with such courses, the material he wanted to cover on the last day was more than the allotted time afforded so it was a bit rushed at the end. However, all in all, the course was profitable for me and, I’m sure, for the rest of the delegates.

Interesting points:

 • One of the delegates was disruptive in a major way. I’m sure you’ve all been in courses or classes where one or two people ask questions incessantly, not particularly to gain any further understanding but really to show off their erudition, education, or experience. These people are the main cause of classes running over, I believe. Tom was fairly deft at parrying this guy’s questions but I think we would have had about an hour more if the guy had just kept his big fat bazoo shut.
 • While the course was fascinating, one of the things about Tom Gilb is that he’s been around the software development arena since 1958. He worked for IBM for a few years, and has been an independent consultant since then. Fifty-two years of working has gifted him with a fund of war stories, most of which end by Tom either saving the day or by Tom being ignored, with a major catastrophe for the client ensuing. So, in a way, all the courses Tom gives are about Tom Gilb. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but I would like to hear about some times when Tom tried to do something and failed at it. A long succession of successes doesn’t teach you much, while one instructive failure can bring a lot more insight into a subject.
 • I should thank TSG for making their classroom available for free for an entire week for this course. Not many training organisations would do something like that.
 • The major reason for software (or any) projects to fail is, in Tom’s opinion, is Prince II, the management method adopted by the UK government and large corporations. You can get certificates in it, take training in it, but when applied to projects it produces a mountain of paperwork and usually unsatisfactory results. Tom’s method is to determine requirements, produce a metric by which to measure them, do a reasonably accurate estimation, and then chunk the project up into iterations of about 1 a week (no more than 2% of the total effort), where each iteration delivers value to somebody. Each of these iterations is estimable, but estimates become clearer nearer to the time when the iteration occurs. This is, of course, an oversimplification. He has created a planning language called planguage in which all this planning and engineering is written. His book, Competitive Engineering, gives a much more comprehensive (and very dense) treatment of the subject.
 • He claims, and I have no reason to doubt it, that his methods (which have been around since the late 1960’s/early 1970’s) were drawn upon by Kent Beck in the development of Agile, Extreme, SCRUM, and other forms of evolutionary and cyclical software development methodologies. Apparently he has written statements from Beck and some other people to this effect. I think he was probably the first.
 • His major problem with Agile, Extreme, and SCRUM is that, rather than aiming at delivering value on each iteration, these methods aim at delivering lines of code (the “burn rate”) or chunks of program but not necessarily value with each iteration. Gilb’s Evo method is planned so that every iteration produces something of value for some stakeholder(s) in the project.
 • His website has a multitude of interesting documents on this and many other subjects.

I caught up with my chum Steve, who is still unable to offer any work, despite the work being just over the horizon for years. He was on the course and will be on a similar, shorter, more technical course next week with Gilb.

I look forward to reading the Competitive Engineering book and perhaps gaining some insight and useful tools for both project planning and general life planning—he gave examples of where people used his planning methods on life goals as well as project goals.

A course

Monday, January 4th, 2010

I’m taking a course in business communication about software development this week from the famous Tom Gilb. He is the co-author with Dorothy Graham of the book Software Inspection, which is an expansion of the relatively famous Fagin inspection method pioneered at IBM in the 1950s. This is the second course I’ve taken from him; the first one was the second day I was in the United Kingdom, back in January of 1994. It was a course to qualify me as a manager of the inspection process. Unfortunately, the company didn’t use inspections for very long (they are time-consuming and expensive), so I haven’t done an inspection for a while.

So today was the first day of this week-long course. One thing that has struck me from the first time I met Tom: his courses and books may have ostensible titles like “Software Inspection” or “Principles of Software Engineering Management”, but they are actually all variations on the same subject: “Tom Gilb”. He has been in the software business for 52 years, and has built up such a history that everything he does is couched in war stories which star himself.

There is no doubt that Tom is gifted, highly intelligent, insightful about the processes around software engineering, and articulate. However, everything he talks and writes about revolves around himself and his exploits.

I have come to the conclusion that this is kind of tired and intrudes into the process of learning some of the doubtless valuable lessons and insights he has to offer.

Another interesting thing that I’ve noticed is that many of the delegates, who only know him from his reputation and his books, are so in awe of him that they treat him with the kind of reverence normally reserved for Popes or cardinals, or at least archbishops. They seem to believe that every morsel of information that emerges from his mouth is sacred. While I don’t share this reverence (I know of at least one occasion where he let down a mutual friend in order to court another possible business contact) it does intrude on the learning process.

The really good thing about this course is that it is free to people who are not currently employed. There was thus an enormous takeup, of course, and there are 30 people (plus Tom and his wife, who is kind of a power behind the throne, making sure that everything runs smoothly) in the room. There are two to a table, with 15 tables in a room designed for 10. There are not enough power points for all the delegates—thus, those of us who arrived closer to 9 am had no power point and my netbook ran out of juice by mid-afternoon.

The course goes until Friday. At the end I’ll recap what I believe I learned from it.

Random thoughts for the New Year

Friday, January 1st, 2010
 • I have pretty much stopped looking at Usenet newsgroups in favour of Twitter, Facebook, and Live Journal. Sad, but true.
 • You will all think I’m crazy, but a taste from my childhood that I cannot reproduce with the equipment at my disposal is percolated coffee. Yes, it tasted boiled, it was strong, it was assertive, it might even have tasted burnt. However, it is something I crave. Pyrex glass percolators are on sale on eBay by their dozens, but they are almost all located in the US. A six- or eight-cup glass percolator is what I want. I may buy one and have it shipped to my brother in time for our visit this year.
 • I also want a theremin. Totally mad, but after seeing this YouTube video of Clara Rockmere playing “The Swan” by Saint-Saens, I am hooked. To my astonishment, they are available on eBay as well. There are many models, one- and two-antenna models.
 • It has been quite cold so far this winter—I wish it would warm up a bit.
 • After finishing my metronidazole, I had my first alcoholic drink in two months or more. It was Drambuie on the rocks. What I wasn’t aiming for is the rocketing-up of my blood sugar the next morning.
 • We went to the Saatchi Gallery today to see some current American artists’ works. With one or two exceptions, they were shite. Oh well…the fare at Patisserie Val

Today’s Christmas preparations

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

I am really tuckered out now. This afternoon SE1 tweeted that the Seizure art exhibit was still on at Harper Road. I’ve been meaning to visit, but hadn’t gotten around to it. As I had nothing better to do this afternoon I walked over and saw it. It is an abandoned apartment which has been covered inside walls and ceiling with copper sulfate crystals. It is stunning, and it’s a pity it’ll be destroyed when the exhibit is over on the 3rd of January. I took pictures but they don’t capture the experience very well. Then I stopped by the church on the way home to put out the candelabra we use at Christmas and Easter. Someone seems to have nicked the candle snuffers, though.

I hung out the sheets to dry after washing, and then I made my Grapenut Pudding. While it was baking, arrived for our annual Christmas/Boxing Day bash—as there is no public transport on Christmas Day here, he stays with us so he can sing with his church choir. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to make it down here.

We went out to Nando’s for dinner, courtesy of as his Christmas present, and then I prepared the sprouts for tomorrow’s dinner. I think we should be OK for eating tomorrow.

The Anadama bread has met with HWMBO’s approval, and I look forward to having the Grapenut pudding for dessert tomorrow. I made it with Splenda instead of sugar, so it should be easier on the carbs than it would be otherwise.

Soon time for bed. Santa’s not stopping by tonight, AFAIK.

Today’s baking

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

I decided a few days ago that I would do some baking before Christmas. But not the usual stuff (pies and cakes). A bread that I remember from my misspent youth is Anadama bread. It’s a bread which uses not only wheat flour but cornmeal and molasses. There is even a story behind it!

“It took me 2 years of trial and error to get the perfect Anadama recipe and this is it. The culmination of many variations, it makes the best toast, which we serve with our own strawberry jam. Originally the bread was perfected in Maine and eaten by fishermen. The wives would make cornmeal mush for their tired and cold husbands coming off the fishing boats. One day a fisherman tired of just cornmeal mush said to his wife, ‘Anna, damn it, I’m tired of mush – make bread,’ and she did and he called it Anadama bread. How true, I don’t know, but it makes all us Mainers laugh!”–Granes Fairhaven Inn, Bath, Maine

I discovered my bread pans are too small, so the bread didn’t rise as much as it would have in two pans since I had to use three. However, it’s quite tasty and I think it will make lovely toast.

Recipe:

1 cup molasses
1/2 lb margarine
3-1/2 cups water
1 cup cornmeal
7 cups flour, divided into two equal portions
1 tsp salt
2 pkg dry yeast

Bring just to boiling point molasses, margarine, and water. Lower heat to simmer and add cornmeal, whisking as you add slowly. Simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cool. In large bowl mix all dry ingredients except last 3-1/2 cups flour. Add cooled wet ingredients to dry and beat for 2 minutes. Add last 3-1/2 cups flour and blend with hands. Turn out on floured board and knead for 5 minutes, adding more flour if needed for right bread consistency. Let rise in greased bowl until double; punch down and let rest 5 minutes. Make into 2 loaves and put in two 9×5-inch greased bread pans. Let rise until double again. Bake at 400 degrees F (gas mark 6 for you UKans) for 45-50 minutes. Cool on rack.

Tomorrow I’m going to make “Grapenut Pudding” for Xmas dessert. Another artifact of my youth. It is easier than doing Squash Pie. However, will have to buy lots of milk tonight after dinner.

Today’s Transport Video

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

London would have been quite different if the plans of London Transport had been followed through 50 years ago. This really interesting video shows what might have been had they done so, and what’s there now.

I think that this is close to ‘s old stomping grounds.

Today’s Heartwarming Story

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

James and Lolie Brackin were married for 59 years and were devoted to one another. They died together in a nursing home just a few minutes apart. The quotation I like best is this:

Ratty, part II

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Just wanted to assure people that the way under the sink has been closed off by wire netting, so vermin have a smaller chance of getting in or out.

The exterminator said that the rat most likely came up from the sewers through the powder room toilet, so we are keeping the lid closed. I may get an unpleasant surprise in the early morning, but the care I will get in the coronary ward will more than make up for it.

HWMBO was horrified when I told him the story about the rat, by the way. He hates having vermin around, and complains about it, but when the vermin are finally brought to book, he’s sad.
